A documentary animation film aimed at children and young people wishing to take part in a new short break scheme for carers has been made by youngsters to share their experience of it. The short break scheme allows carers to take a break and offers young people the opportunity to meet new people, make friends and have challenging and stimulating experiences in a fun and safe environment. Bridgend County Borough Council's Family Link team worked with the children and the community arts group in Bettws to produce the 15-minute animation film using a range of mediums such as modelling clay, animation, drama, drawing and music. Film makers from Valley and Vale Community Arts supported the young people to tell their story. The film gave the youngsters the opportunity to describe the scheme from their experience, to share the hopes and fears they had when they first arrived, what they thought about their break and to answer questions other young people might have. There are already films available for the parents of children and young disabled people who are interested in the short break programme, but this is a first from the young people's perspective. The DVD will be sent to the interested young people and families to watch in their homes and at a later date, a social worker will visit them in order to discuss any questions or concerns the young people might have.
